RANDOM IDEAS
art = randomize(idea): The randomize function is a standard fixture in all major computer programming languages. It is an important function with many uses. What happens when creative minds explore 'random' as a means to produce art? Here are two artists doing just that.

The Random Collage Generator
USA

"My goal is to create unique events on the Web, not digital reproductions of 'real art', but new art."
The Random Collage Generator is a Web site where, as the name suggests, custom programming is employed to randomly select image files to produce new collage art works.

New York artist Peter Baldes has a goal to make a truly mechanized art machine, and, to create a truly one of a kind Web experience. Collage works are generated by random selection from the artist's data base of original plus found image files, and by design, it is unlikely you will ever see the same collage repeated.

Worth noting, too, Peter has devised a number of different ways to present his work, and this is interesting to see.

"At this time there are 132 images in the base directory. In the future I hope to have at least 1,000 images."

Peter's contribution
to new media development might be in the creation of an art machine, or perhaps in his exploration of possibilities for presentation.

A very different approach
to the idea of random art can be found at the Web site art gallery of Antoine Moreau. Here the element of chance comes not by machine programming, but by human interaction.

"So, it's easy. On this blank image with a point on it, you make something, what you want..."
Antoine Moreau's exploration of random art begins with a single white square containing a single point. Visitors to his Web site are invited to download the image file, work with it in any way they wish, and to return their finished image to Antoine via email.

Returned works are then posted in a growing gallery of 'random' art. Although it is not a stated requirement, most if not all of the returned works maintain Antoine's starting point, which lends a continuity to the body of work, even across very different styles and subject matter.

"Then, I'll show your work of art here."
It should be noted that Antoine does not specifically state that his project is about making random art -- it is only my view on what it could be about. This is a creative and entertaining Web site well worth visiting. Have fun.
