FRENCH CONNECTION
Bonjour! Bienvenue! Welcome to all of my French friends and visitors from around the world. And everyone else, too. This week features a Web site in France where both French and the universal language of creative expression are spoken. You will understand.

Périclès Museum
FRANCE

"It seemed to us that the Net was raising new questions that, as artists, we couldn't ignore. This was the starting point."
Artists Jean-Philippe and Thierry of Périclès were kind enough to email this description of their goals for the Périclès Web site, so in the words of the artists themselves:

"When we first launched Périclès in March 1996, our purpose was -- it still is -- to create an open-platform, a virtual studio, for Web specific works and projects. So we began inviting artists whose attitude and work we thought could fit with this medium. As most of them weren't familiar with computers and none were connected on the Net, we spent much time trying to see how their works could exist on the site. Work stuff. We still act that way today.

Right now, the site is opened to various contributors, from writers to architects. The only thing they have in common is that their works were conceived for the Web, and that we asked for it. Of course, it doesn't look like what some would call 'Net art' or would expect art dealing with technology to be ('digital imagery', 3D stuff, and so on). Just living and thinking people sharing their work with others. Rather a nomads' crossing than a gallery."

"étoile filante (wandering star) ...this part of the site uses a random link script... Deliberately, we gave no explanation or warning about it. It is a closed world from which you cannot escape."

A surprising, intricate, and well considered Web site art gallery with wonderfully inventive navigation and beautiful works of art and literature produced especially for the Web.
